The Penguin on HBO: Why Colin Farrell's Gotham Crime Saga is a Must-Watch

By Tammy Reese

Excitement Builds for ‘The Penguin’ on HBO: Gotham’s Criminal Underworld Awaits

DC fans, the wait is almost over! Mark your calendars for September 19, 2024, because that’s when “The Penguin”, starring the incredible Colin Farrell, makes its highly anticipated premiere on HBO. This eight-episode series, created by Lauren LeFranc, promises to take us deeper into the dark, gritty world of Gotham’s underworld — a continuation of the crime saga we saw in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman”. If you’re ready to see Farrell reprise his role as Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot (aka The Penguin), you’re in for a treat. With a stellar supporting cast and gripping storylines, this series will keep you glued to the screen.

What to Expect from The Penguin

Taking place after the events of “The Batman”, this series dives into the aftermath of Carmine Falcone’s death and Penguin’s rise to power in Gotham’s criminal underworld. Farrell brings a level of depth and intensity to Oz that makes it impossible to look away. It’s clear from the first episode that he’s a force to be reckoned with, whether he’s sharing the screen or holding it down solo. And while Farrell’s performance is sure to stand out, Cristin Milioti (playing Sofia Falcone) is one to keep your eye on. Her portrayal of the ruthless Falcone heir brings tension and complexity to the series. You’ll be drawn into her power struggle with Oz as they each vie for control of Gotham.

Star-Studded Cast

The cast is stacked with talent beyond Farrell and Milioti. Expect to see performances from: Rhenzy Feliz as Victor Aguilar, Michael Kelly as Johnny Viti, Clancy Brown, as Sal Maroni, Deirdre O’Connell as Francis Cobb, Theo Rossi as Dr. Julian Rush to name a few.

Why You Should Watch

If you’re a fan of crime dramas, “The Penguin” should be at the top of your watchlist. From the intricate power dynamics in Gotham’s underworld to the jaw-dropping performances by Farrell and the ensemble cast, this series promises to deliver gripping, edge-of-your-seat drama every week. And if you’re heading to New York Comic Con 2024, don’t miss the HBO panel on October 17, where the cast and creatives will share insights and an extended sneak peek of Episode 5. Expect to see Farrell, Milioti, and other cast members live, along with showrunner Lauren LeFranc and prosthetic makeup designer Mike Marino.

Episode Details and Air Dates

Episode 1: “After Hours” (Premieres Thursday, September 19) In the wake of Falcone’s death, Oz seeks to establish his legitimacy in Gotham’s criminal underworld. Following the premiere, new episodes will air Sunday nights at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and Max, with the series finale scheduled for November 10, 2024.

My Take After the First Episode

After watching the first episode, I can confidently say that Colin Farrell is at the top of his game. His portrayal of Oz Cobblepot is magnetic — you can’t take your eyes off him, whether he’s scheming, manipulating, or committing crimes. Every line, every glance, he makes you believe in Oz’s ambition and danger. Colin walks the walk and talks the talk while embodying this role to perfection. Milioti is equally captivating, making her a serious threat to Oz’s growing empire.

Ready to dive into Gotham’s underworld? The Penguin is shaping up to be one of HBO’s most compelling shows to date. Don’t miss the premiere on September 19, and be sure to tune in every Sunday after that for more action packed twists and turns.
