FINALLY HERE: The Lucas Museum of Narrative Arts to Open This Month
By Sandy Rodriguez,
The long-awaited Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Exposition Park will welcome visitors as of September 22nd, 2026. Its focus, storytelling through images, makes this new space truly unique.
It will certainly delight Star Wars fans. They will enjoy, for instance, a special exhibition titled Star Wars in Motion and monumental sculptures inspired by memorable scenes, not to mention a destination restaurant called Skywalker Grill. The museum, founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, however, will have offerings that extend far beyond the legendary film saga.
Over 30 galleries and roughly 100,000 square feet of artworks will shine a light on stories told through the ages by visual means, going as far back as cave paintings and including fine art and pop culture. The work of artists as varied as Frida Kahlo, Norman Rockwell, and Robert Crumb will be on display. Films will be shown continuously in two areas, the Robert Flaherty Theater and the Slavko Vorkapich Theater. A research library will also be available within this expansive museum, designed by Ma Yansong.
The building is surrounded by spectacular gardens, designed by Mia Lehrer of Studio-MLA, where visitors can relax and decompress or engage in social interaction while viewing diverse plants, flowers, and trees that are native to Southern California, along with sculptures by artists such as Fernando Botero and Lucy Topete.
