Academy Award–Winning Actress and Director Honored for Trailblazing Career
On Sunday, October 12, at 2:00 p.m., the Barrymore Film Center will welcome Academy Award–winning actress and director Lee Grant for a very special celebration of her 100th birthday.
Grant is one of the rare artists in Hollywood history to have won Oscars in both acting and directing categories. She earned the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Shampoo (1976) and later received the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for Down and Out in America(1986). She was also the first woman ever honored by the Directors Guild of America, underscoring her pioneering role behind the camera.
Her story is as historic as it is inspiring. Grant survived 12 years on the McCarthy-era Hollywood blacklist, exiled from film and television work for refusing to compromise her principles. Her resilience, artistry, and fearless commitment to truth transformed her into a trailblazer who used her voice for the unheard, shaping American film and television across generations.
In honor of her milestone, Grant will present a screening of her Oscar-winning documentary Down and Out in America, followed by a Q&A. The film, which exposed the stark realities of poverty and homelessness in the 1980s, remains as urgent and timely today as when it first premiered.
