Christian Rodrigo: The Barcelona Native Bringing Microtheater's Spirit to Los Angeles — and Soon, the World

Actor, producer, and director Christian Rodrigo has spent more than sixteen years building a career in Los Angeles, where he's appeared in international productions like Snatch, Assassin, and Hispanics Satanics, sharing the screen or stage with names like Scarlett Johansson, Matthew McConaughey, John Malkovich, Robert Pattinson, and Jon Bon Jovi.

But beyond his film and television credits, his real passion has always been theater. Rodrigo spent more than six years as part of The Actors' Gang, the celebrated company founded by actor and director Tim Robbins, and it was there that he found a space of creative freedom and community that would shape the rest of his career.

From Barcelona's Micro theater to a Festival of His Own

Inspired by the short-form microtheater tradition so popular in his native Barcelona, Rodrigo began introducing the concept into The Actors' Gang's own programming. After later directing another theater festival in Los Angeles, he decided to take the next step and build something of his own: Brisk Festival, a platform created to give visibility to emerging playwrights, directors, and actors who often struggle to find a stage in traditional circuits.

Since then, the festival has become a reference point for short-form theater in California, giving voice to hundreds of writers, directors, and performers, and building an artistic community that keeps growing. Brisk Festival now maintains a database of nearly 2,000 short plays — one of the largest collections of its kind — and it continues expanding every year.

Crossing Borders

In 2024, with the support of an extraordinary team of collaborators, Brisk Festival crossed international borders and held its first edition in Buenos Aires — a success both in the quality of the work presented and in audience response. That milestone reinforced the project's international ambitions and opened the door to future editions in cities like Miami, Mexico City, Barcelona, and Madrid.

On the Future of Theater

"We live in an era defined by artificial intelligence, screens, and growing human disconnection. That's exactly why I believe theater will keep growing. It's one of the few places where people can gather to experience a story told live, by other human beings. That connection, that shared emotion — no technology can replace it."

For Rodrigo, the magic of theater lies in its ability to bring people together around stories that move them, make them laugh, invite reflection, or simply offer a moment of shared enjoyment.

"Theater is generosity, passion, community, and encounter. And when it's presented in short form, it lets the audience discover entirely different worlds in a single night, explore different emotions and points of view, and leave the theater with questions, inspiration, or simply a smile. That diversity is what makes the format so special."

A Growing Legacy

With a clearly international vision and a continued commitment to creating opportunities for new creators, Christian Rodrigo keeps building a project that was born in Barcelona and today connects thousands of artists and audiences on both sides of the Atlantic.
