Womenpreneur Spotlight: Genesys Fitness Creator Beverly K. Johnson

Having been a Zumba instructor for years, Beverly K. Johnson knew her influence included more than fitness training when a candid conversation with an exercising client revealed that women in caretaker roles often forget about themselves. She named her new motivational fitness business Genesys Fitness because it signified a rebirth for the often “forgotten” woman: the divorce’, caretaker, and empty-nester.

GenFit is a community of women who recognize the need to reclaim their lives and are emotionally ready to do the work with Beverly K. Johnson, a motivational life coach, fitness trainer, and “girlfriend of authority”. At GenFit, we believe self-care takes priority over caring for others because it is in caring for ourselves that we make the best caregivers. We believe that by helping women rediscover who they are after suffering a loss, she will be empowered to become her ideal self – physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Hi Beverly, it’s super nice to interview you today for Heart Of Hollywood Magazine. Thank you for the opportunity to sit down and chat with you today!

You named your motivational fitness business Genesys Fitness because it signified a rebirth for the often “forgotten” woman. What did your rebirth look like during this journey of empowering others? My journey began while I was recovering from my divorce. No one tells you how emotionally draining the process is. I remember feeling lost and grabbling with my new reality. To deal with the grief, I comforted myself with food. Food was a constant companion and never judgmental. It took a random weigh-in at a doctor’s appointment to realize that I’ve gained 30 pounds. That moment snapped me back into reality! At that moment, I decided to fight for myself. Little by little, I let go of my old habits and embraced the new ones. Please tell our readers about the services you provide.

Genesys Fitness is a concierge service. We provide in-home (and virtual) services for our clients. Our services include personal training and group coaching sessions. Last year, we expanded our footprint and created an online gym. We offer classes three days a week. Our specialties include dance fitness, strength training, and cardio kickboxing. What do you enjoy most about the work that you do? I enjoy seeing my client’s confidence grow. To see a client on their first day and witness the growth is an amazing feeling. I can literally see the growth happening and it’s an honor to be a part of the journey. What type of feedback do you get from your clients? The first thing I ask my clients to do is to trust me and trust the process. With each client, I develop customized plans and that requires open communication and trust. I want to create a safe space for them. Because of that foundation, I’ve received positive feedback and increased client retention. What is a super fun fact about yourself that many may not be aware of? During my junior year of college, I interned at Disney World in Orlando, FL. While there, tryouts were held for various characters. I was prepared to try out for a particular character; only to discover that I was too tall.

Who are some of the most important people in your life? Hands down- my family! I have a small family so it’s important that we remain connected. And of course, I can’t forget my circle of friends that keep me grounded. We all need a circle of friends who will support you and hold you accountable when needed. What do you do for self-care? I put my phone on ‘do not disturb’ and take time for myself. I honor my body’s need for rest and relaxation. My activities can vary from taking a nap, watching movies, or going hiking.

Where do you see your business in 5 years, what steps are you taking to get there? In the next five years, I see myself moving in the coaching space and publishing books. I’m looking forward to expanding Genesys Fitness to the wellness world. I feel that we have a lot to offer to the world. What is next for you? I’m working with several other leaders in the community to prepare for a few events next year. I’m shifting my efforts to include more collaboration with like-minded leaders in the community.

How can we keep up to date with all you have going on?

I encourage everyone to stay connected with me using my social media. I’m active on Facebook and Instagram.
