The Met Gala’s Great Fashion Gamble Is Over: John Galliano’s 2027 Exhibition Has Been Canceled
By staff writer,
What began as a celebration of one of fashion's most influential designers has become a much larger conversation about artistic legacy, accountability and where the fashion industry draws the line.
Fashion thrives on reinvention. But sometimes, even fashion's most powerful institutions discover that some histories are more complicated than a runway can contain.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art and John Galliano have called off “John Galliano: Horizons,” the highly anticipated Costume Institute exhibition that was expected to define the 2027 Met Gala. The decision, announced August 31, comes only one month after the museum unveiled the exhibition—and after a rapidly intensifying backlash over Galliano's controversial past.
For the Met, this is more than the cancellation of another exhibition. It is an unusually public reckoning over what happens when extraordinary creative achievement collides with deeply troubling personal conduct.
And for the fashion world, the question is even bigger: can an institution celebrate the work without appearing to celebrate the person behind it?
A Career That Changed Fashion
Few designers have had a career as theatrical, provocative and influential as Galliano's.
From his groundbreaking 1984 graduation collection at Central Saint Martins to his years at Givenchy and Christian Dior, and later his transformative work at Maison Margiela, Galliano developed a reputation for fashion as spectacle—collections built around characters, history, fantasy, craftsmanship and elaborate storytelling.
The planned Horizons exhibition was intended to explore nearly four decades of that creative journey through garments, accessories, sketches, toiles, research books and archival materials. The Met described Galliano as one of the most inventive and influential designers of the past four decades.
Had it gone forward, the exhibition would have placed Galliano in rare company. He would have become only the third living designer to receive a major retrospective at the Costume Institute, following Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons in 2017.
For a designer whose work has influenced generations of fashion creatives, photographers, stylists and performers, the recognition was enormous. But so was the controversy.
The Past That Refused to Stay in the Past
Galliano's career was dramatically disrupted in 2011 after video emerged of him making antisemitic remarks at a Paris establishment. He was subsequently dismissed by Dior and convicted by a French court of a hate crime, receiving a suspended fine.
Galliano later apologized and embarked on a highly public process of accountability and rehabilitation. He eventually returned to the fashion industry and went on to lead Maison Margiela, where his work was once again celebrated by critics and fashion insiders.
That complicated history was central to the debate surrounding Horizons. The exhibition was not initially presented as a simple celebration of Galliano's career; the intention was to examine his creative achievements alongside the ethical questions surrounding his conduct.
For some, that distinction mattered. For others, it wasn't enough. Critics argued that giving Galliano the extraordinary platform of a Met exhibition—one of the most prestigious forms of recognition in fashion—risked turning rehabilitation into institutional endorsement.
Then Came the Date
The controversy became even more sensitive because of the exhibition's connection to the 2027 Met Gala and its planned timing.
The 2027 Met Gala is scheduled for May 3, 2027, while the exhibition had been planned to open shortly afterward. Reports noted that the timing would have coincided with Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, adding another layer to the debate surrounding the exhibition.
That combination intensified criticism from political figures, Jewish community advocates and others who questioned whether Galliano should be given such a prominent institutional platform. What had initially been announced as a celebration of fashion history was suddenly being discussed as a question of institutional responsibility.
The Decision
On August 31, the Met and Galliano announced together that John Galliano: Horizons would not proceed as planned.
Met Director and CEO Max Hollein described the decision as the result of discussions with Galliano and those involved with the exhibition. Galliano, meanwhile, expressed gratitude toward the museum and acknowledged the continuing consequences of his past.
He stated that he remains accountable for the pain caused by his words, particularly to Jewish and Asian communities, and emphasized that atonement cannot be achieved through a single exhibition or institutional gesture.
The language surrounding the cancellation is significant. This was not framed simply as a museum rejecting a designer. It was presented as a mutual decision to prevent the controversy surrounding Galliano from overshadowing the Costume Institute's broader work.

What Happens to the 2027 Met Gala Now?
For the moment, there is a rare sense of uncertainty surrounding fashion's biggest night.
The Met has confirmed that information regarding a new spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition and the 2027 Met Gala will be announced at a later date. That means the fashion industry is effectively waiting for a new chapter to be written. And that could be fascinating.
The Met Gala has always been more than a red carpet. Its theme influences designers, celebrity styling, beauty trends, editorial shoots and the broader cultural conversation surrounding fashion. A last-minute change at this level could produce an entirely different creative direction for 2027.
The Bigger Question: Can Art Be Separated From the Artist?
Perhaps the most important legacy of the Galliano controversy will have little to do with what celebrities eventually wear on the Met steps. Instead, it may influence how museums and cultural institutions approach controversial creative figures in the future.
Fashion has historically been comfortable with complicated personalities. Designers have often been treated as larger-than-life figures whose genius, eccentricity and personal behavior become intertwined with their mythology. But that relationship is changing.
Audiences increasingly want institutions to answer difficult questions about who receives recognition, whose stories are elevated and what messages those honors communicate. The Galliano case demonstrates just how quickly that conversation can move from the fashion pages into politics, culture and public debate.
Fashion's Most Powerful Stage Is Now Open
There is an intriguing irony in all of this. Galliano's proposed exhibition was supposed to explore the idea of horizons—the boundaries of fashion, history, identity and creative possibility.
Instead, the controversy surrounding the exhibition has created a different kind of horizon: a boundary around what the fashion establishment is willing to celebrate.
The Met now has the difficult task of deciding what comes next. Will the replacement exhibition choose a safer subject? A contemporary movement? A broader exploration of fashion history? Or perhaps something completely unexpected?
Whatever comes next will be watched closely. Because after the Galliano decision, the 2027 Met Gala is no longer simply waiting for a theme. It is waiting for a statement. And in fashion, sometimes the most powerful statement is the one an institution decides it cannot make.
