Do You Know the Size of Your Bra?

Why finding the right fit can change more than your wardrobe
Jessica was 42 when she walked into Honey Birdette looking for something special for her anniversary. After years of buying bras based on habit, she decided to let a fitting specialist take her measurements.
She was convinced she knew her size. She didn’t. After being measured, Jessica discovered she had been wearing a band that was too large and a cup that was too small for years.
“I felt like I’d been walking around in the wrong shoes my whole life,” she said afterward. “Everything suddenly fit right — my clothes, my posture, even how I stood.”
Jessica’s experience is far from unusual. Many women continue wearing the same bra size for years, even as their bodies change through age, weight fluctuations, pregnancy, hormonal changes and simply the passage of time.
And the consequences of an ill-fitting bra aren't always obvious. A band that rides up, straps that constantly slip, cups that gape or spill over, and underwires that dig into the skin can all be signs that your current bra may not be the right fit.
The good news? Finding a better fit doesn't have to be complicated.

Start With the Band
If you want to check your size at home, begin with a soft measuring tape. Wrap the tape snugly around your ribcage, directly underneath your bust. Keep the tape level across your back and avoid pulling it so tightly that it digs into your skin.
This measurement provides a starting point for determining your band size. However, sizing systems vary between brands, so your measurement should be considered a guide rather than an absolute answer. For the most accurate result, compare your measurements with the individual brand's sizing chart.
Then Measure Your Bust
Next, measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape parallel to the floor and comfortably loose. The difference between your bust measurement and band measurement can help estimate your cup size. Traditionally, each additional inch of difference corresponds approximately to the next cup letter.
But here's the important part: bra sizing isn't completely standardized. A 34C in one brand may not fit exactly like a 34C in another. Different styles — from a T-shirt bra to a balconette, plunge, wireless or push-up — can also fit differently.
That's why trying on a bra and paying attention to how it feels on your body can be just as important as the number on the tag.
Five Signs Your Bra May Not Fit
Take a moment in front of the mirror and check for these common signs:
1. The band rides up. Your band should sit relatively level around your body rather than creeping toward your shoulder blades.
2. The straps are doing all the work. Your straps provide adjustment and support, but they shouldn't be responsible for carrying the majority of the weight.
3. Your cups gape. Gaps can indicate that the cup is too large, the style doesn't suit your shape, or the bra needs adjusting.
4. Your breasts spill over the cups. Bulging at the top or sides can be a sign that you need a larger cup or a different bra shape.
5. The underwire digs into your breast tissue. The underwire should sit around the breast rather than directly on it. Persistent discomfort is a good reason to try another size or style.
Your Body Changes. Your Bra Size Can Change Too.
One of the biggest mistakes women make is assuming that the bra size they wore in their twenties should still work decades later. Bodies evolve.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight changes, aging and hormonal fluctuations can all affect breast volume and shape. Even without a major physical change, bras can stretch and lose some of their original support over time.
That means a bra fitting shouldn't necessarily be something you do once and forget about forever. Think of it as part of your wardrobe maintenance.

Finding the Right Style for Your Wardrobe
Size is only one part of the equation. The right bra also depends on what you're wearing and the type of support or silhouette you want.
A T-shirt bra can provide a smooth look under fitted clothing. A wireless bra can prioritize comfort and flexibility. A balconette can complement lower necklines, while a plunge style can work beautifully with V-neck clothing.
For active lifestyles, a supportive sports bra can provide the structure needed for exercise. And sometimes, lingerie isn't simply about function. A beautifully designed lace bra or matching set can become part of the fashion experience itself.
The goal is to find pieces that make you feel comfortable, confident and completely yourself.
Where to Find Your Fit
Once you have a better idea of your measurements, explore different brands and styles. The right bra isn't necessarily the most expensive one — it's the one that fits your body, supports you comfortably and works with the clothes you actually wear.

The Takeaway
Finding the right bra isn't about changing your body to fit the garment. It's about finding a garment that works with your body.
The difference can be surprisingly noticeable: better comfort, a smoother silhouette and clothing that simply falls the way it was designed to. For Jessica, it took one fitting appointment to discover what she'd been missing.
“I thought I needed a new bra,” she said. “It turns out I needed the right bra.”
Sometimes, the smallest change in your wardrobe can make the biggest difference in how you carry yourself. Your size may have changed. Your style may have changed. And that's perfectly okay. The perfect fit is simply the one that makes you feel like yourself.
