GLAMOUR WITH BOUNDARIES

New Red Carpet Fashion Rules Enforced at Cannes

By Jérôme Tripier-Mondancin and Sandy Rodriguez

In an effort to balance elegance with practicality, and, some might say, decency, the

Cannes Film Festival has officially updated its red carpet dress code. It is now

reinforcing boundaries concerning attire worn by attendees.

The new rules, listed on the festival’s official website, explicitly prohibit nudity and

oversized garments that obstruct movement or seating.

“Nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival,” the

updated guidelines state. Additionally, “Voluminous outfits, in particular those with a

large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the

theatre are not permitted.”

The festival has made it clear that these regulations are not just suggestions. Staff at

the event will be required to deny red carpet access to any guest who does not comply

with the dress code.

In past years, some stars have worn highly revealing clothing as well as sizeable

garments that could block the movements of those around them. While Cannes has

long been synonymous with high fashion and headline-making style statements, this

move appears to aim at maintaining a respectful and orderly experience for all

participants, balancing creativity with courtesy.

As fashion continues to push boundaries, the festival is establishing its own, reminding

attendees that glamour still has guidelines.
