Paper lanterns at a festival

Not every Angeleno wants a chainsaw in the dark. For families with young children, Los Angeles offers a gentler Halloween full of costumes, candy and culture. Here are our picks for the final stretch of October.

Saturday, October 24

Haunted Little Tokyo Scavenger Hunt. Starting at Terasaki Budokan, 249 S. Los Angeles Street, families collect stamps around Little Tokyo for a special treat from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is free for all ages, and costumes are encouraged. https://littletokyola.org/haunted

Día de los Muertos at Grand Park. The free opening celebration, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., includes sugar-skull workshops, face painting and live music. No ticket is needed. https://grandparkla.org

Two Weekends: Boo at the L.A. Zoo

On October 24 and 25 and October 31 and November 1, the Los Angeles Zoo in Griffith Park hosts Boo at the L.A. Zoo, free with paid admission or membership. The zoo lists trick-or-treating at six stations from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., costumed characters, a new inflatable corn maze, Halloween-themed keeper talks with pumpkin enrichment for the animals, and pumpkin painting for an added fee. Costumes are welcome, but full face masks are not allowed. https://lazoo.org/plan-your-visit/special-experiences/boo

Through October 31: Disneyland Resort

Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim began August 23 and runs through October 31, as reported by Disney Tourist Blog. https://disneyland.disney.go.com

Tips for Parents

Choose costumes that allow good visibility and comfortable walking, add reflective tape or a small light for evening outings, and bring a few allergy-safe treats of your own. Event details, times and prices are set by each organizer and may change, so please confirm on the official website before you go.
