On Sunday, October 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., CicLAvia returns to the route where it all began in 2010. CicLAvia—Heart of LA opens 6.5 miles of streets through Echo Park, Downtown Los Angeles, Chinatown, Little Tokyo, the Arts District and Boyle Heights to people on foot, on bikes, on skates and in wheelchairs. It is free, and no registration is needed.

The nonprofit is celebrating its 16th year with its 68th car-free open streets event. Participants can join anywhere along the route at any time during the day, whether to walk, jog, bike, roller skate, linger or simply watch the city go by.

Four Hubs Along the Route

The route includes four hubs, which are walking zones where cyclists must dismount: the Echo Park Hub, presented by Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez, on Bellevue Avenue off Glendale Boulevard by the south side of Echo Park Lake; the Chinatown Hub on North Broadway north of College Street; the Little Tokyo Hub on South Central Avenue south of 1st Street; and the Mariachi Plaza Hub on 1st Street east of South Boyle Avenue.

The hubs offer free family-friendly activities, restrooms, water refilling stations, basic bike repair, bike parking, places to sit and meet friends, and first aid. Free pedicab rides are available at each hub's information booth.

“Every October, returning to the route where CicLAvia began in 2010 is a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come,” says CicLAvia Executive Director Romel Pascual. “Heart of LA is where LA first experienced what our streets could become when they are designed for people, and not just for cars. CicLAvia reminds us what’s possible when LA makes space for people, prioritizes safety, and brings communities together.”

Rules of the Route

Only people-powered vehicles are allowed. Electric scooters, electric skateboards, hoverboards, electric unicycles and motorcycles are not permitted. Class 1 pedal-assist e-bikes are allowed; Class 2 e-bikes are allowed with the throttle off, and Class 3 e-bikes with pedal-assist off. Manual and motorized wheelchairs are welcome.

Sixteen Years of Open Streets

Inspired by the weekly ciclovía in Bogotá, CicLAvia has been temporarily closing streets to cars and opening them as public parks across Los Angeles since 2010. According to the organization, more than two million Angelenos have taken part. The event is supported by National University, and the 2026 season concludes on Sunday, November 15, with CicLAvia—Pasadena.
