The Top Five Most Anticipated Movies of the Summer

By Jessica Ross

Movie goers will appreciate the summer blockbuster season as one of their favorite times to catch a film. Check out the five most anticipated summer 2023 movies based on fan interest on IMDb.

1) Barbie

Barbie and Ken are having the time of their lives in the colorful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. However, when they get a chance to go to the real world, they soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans. According to Ryan Gosling, he accepted the role of Ken after seeing his daughter's Ken doll lying face down in the mud next to a squished lemon. He then took a shot of the doll and lemon and sent it to Greta Gerwig, saying, "I shall be your Ken, his story must be told."

2) The Little Mermaid

The youngest of King Triton's daughters, Ariel is a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. Longing to find out more about the world beyond the sea, Ariel visits the surface and falls for the dashing Prince Eric. Following her heart, she makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to experience life on land.

The film took 4 years to make due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Melissa McCarthy had no idea she could actually sing before production of this film. She was coached by vocal coach Eric Vetro to prepare for her role as Ursula, and did all of her own singing in the film.

3) Oppenheimer

The movie tells the story of "the father of the atomic bomb," J. Robert Oppenheimer, whose work at the Manhattan Project's Los Alamos Laboratory led to the invention of the first nuclear weapons during World War II.

This will be Christopher Nolan's second film related to World War II events following Dunkirk (2017). The film is also scheduled to be released exactly 6 years to the day after Dunkirk.

4) Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Daredevil archaeologist Indiana Jones races against time to retrieve a legendary dial that can change the course of history. Accompanied by his goddaughter, he soon finds himself squaring off against Jürgen Voller, a former Nazi who works for NASA.

This is the only Indiana Jones film in the series not to be directed by Steven Spielberg - though he does have an executive producer credit. The decision to step away from the film as director was entirely Spielberg's idea

5) The Flash

Worlds collide when the Flash uses his superpowers to travel back in time to change the events of the past. However, when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, he becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation. With no other superheroes to turn to, the Flash looks to coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian -- albeit not the one he's looking for.

Michael Keaton will be 71 at the time of this film's release, making him the oldest actor to play Batman in a live-action film or TV series. The only actors who were older were Adam West, who was 88 when he voiced Batman for a final time in Batman vs. Two-Face (2017) and Olan Soule, who was 74 when he voiced Batman for a final time in the seventh season of Super Friends (1973).

These are the top five most anticipated of the summer acc to IMDb. Which of them are you most excited to watch?
