GOLDEN GLOBES 2026: HOLLYWOOD’S REVAMPED CELEBRATION

By Gilda Baum Lappe and Sandy Rodriguez

The Golden Globes, which have gone through a major rebranding and an expansion of its voting body, took place in January 2026 at the Beverly Hilton. This major awards show helps the industry stay relevant and financially healthy, something that is more difficult now than in the past due to the fragmented cultural landscape. Since there is no monoculture anymore, and the array of entertainment options is practically endless, everyone in Hollywood has to fight even harder for attention.

Comedian Nikki Glaser returned as host for a second year. However, this ceremony, the 83rd edition of the event, was a statement of reinvention. The red carpet was not plain red, but a bespoke oxblood hue, and the area now featured a new staircase meant for dramatic photo opportunities. With this setup, which some partygoers said reminded them of the Met Gala, the stars were truly able to make grand entrances.

The steps were not the only new detail. The Golden Globes teamed up with Polymarket, a platform where users bet on the outcomes of events in pop culture, sports, and so on. This time, boards displayed betting odds and predictions in real time.

This year’s winners included both established actors and breakout stars. Jessie Buckley earned Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama, for her haunting performance in Hamnet, while Wagner Moura took home Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama, for his nuanced role in The Secret Agent

In the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy category, Rose Byrne charmed voters who enjoyed If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. Timothée Chalamet added to his growing list of accolades by receiving Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, for Marty Supreme

Supporting categories brought both surprise and celebration. Teyana Taylor’s emotional response to winning for One Battle After Another was a standout moment, as was Stellan Skarsgard’s first major trophy of the season for Sentimental Value

Big winners included Hamnet (Best Motion Picture, Drama) and One Battle After Another (Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy). KPop Demon Hunters dominated animation and song categories. A new category, Best Podcast, was introduced, and the award went to Good Hang with Amy Poehler. Glaser ended the broadcast with a warm tribute to the late filmmaker Rob Reiner.

While there is no voter overlap between this event and the Academy Awards, it seems the Golden Globes have once again set the stage for awards season, possibly predicting Oscar winners as that other fierce competition draws near.
