From Incarceration to Advocacy: How Chase Walker Is Turning Lived Experience Into Legal Reform

By Tammy Reese

When Chase Walker speaks about justice reform, he does so not from theory alone, but from lived experience — experience that has reshaped his life’s work and now informs a growing educational platform aimed at the next generation of legal and policy leaders.

Walker is a criminal justice advocate and law student whose journey through the New York jail system exposed him to what he describes as systemic failures in accountability, due process, and inmate care. After being falsely arrested on a parole-related assault charge, later dismissed, Walker represented himself in court, successfully challenging the case. But the dismissal marked only the beginning of a deeper reckoning with the realities of incarceration.

While jailed, Walker endured what he has publicly documented as abuse, disputed mental health diagnoses, and prolonged isolation. In response, he undertook a nonviolent hunger strike that lasted 60 days — an act of protest intended to draw attention to conditions inside the facility and the broader treatment of incarcerated individuals. The strike ultimately ended under medical supervision following hospitalization.

Rather than allowing the experience to define him solely by trauma, Walker made a deliberate decision to transform it into scholarship, advocacy, and reform-focused education.

Today, he is channeling that work into the launch of PIF Platform (PIFPlatform.com), a Pay-It-Forward–based initiative designed to educate law students, policymakers, and impacted communities on the human cost of incarceration — and the structural changes required to prevent harm before it occurs.

At its core, PIF Platform functions as both an educational resource and a case study in accountability. Walker is developing a sociological and legal analysis tracing his trajectory from high-performing student to criminalization, incarceration, and eventual reintegration. His work explores hunger strikes as a form of nonviolent protest, the complexities of resocialization after incarceration, and the ways personal experience can inform ethical legal practice.

Now studying criminal justice and law at Erie Community College, Walker is focused on preparing future attorneys and decision-makers to better understand the real-world consequences of policy choices. Through workshops, speaking engagements, and educational content, PIF Platform encourages students and leaders to examine justice not only as a system of laws, but as a lived human experience.

The platform’s Pay-It-Forward model emphasizes responsibility and reciprocity: knowledge gained through experience is reinvested into community education, mentorship, and reform advocacy. Rather than positioning himself solely as a survivor, Walker presents himself as a contributor — one intent on helping institutions evolve through transparency, education, and ethical leadership.

As national conversations around criminal justice continue to shift, Walker’s work occupies a growing space between lived testimony and legal scholarship. His approach is neither reactionary nor abstract. It is rooted in firsthand experience, shaped by academic study, and focused on long-term systemic change.

With the launch of PIFPlatform.com, Walker is signaling a clear next chapter, one defined not by what he endured, but by what he is building.
