Empowering Women Through Media: The Journey of Angelia Stone, Founder of Hope Magazine

By Tammy Reese

Angelia Stone, the visionary founder and CEO of Hope Magazine, has spent nearly two decades uplifting women on their paths to self-discovery. Launched in 2005, Hope Magazine has become a resource of empowerment, focusing on personal growth, resilience, and community for women. Based in Muncie, Indiana, Angelia’s mission extends beyond print, as she uses her platform to encourage mental health awareness, entrepreneurship, and emotional healing. With the release of her book “Yes Sisters” in 2020, Angelia continues to inspire women to build supportive relationships and embrace their journeys authentically.

Please enjoy our interview!

Hope Magazine has been a guiding light for women on their journey of self-discovery since 2005. What was the initial spark that led you to create this publication, and how has its mission evolved over the years?

The initial spark for Hope Magazine came from a deep desire to create a space where women, especially women of color, could see themselves reflected in positive, empowering ways. I wanted to offer something that went beyond the surface of beauty and fashion to speak to the heart of personal growth, resilience, and the power of community. Over the years, Hope has evolved into a platform that not only celebrates beauty and wellness but also provides tools for emotional healing and self-discovery. Our mission has grown to include mental health awareness, entrepreneurship, and the importance of finding purpose, aligning with the multifaceted lives of our readers.

In your book, “Yes Sisters,” you emphasize the importance of surrounding oneself with supportive women. How has your personal experience with female friendships influenced your professional journey as a publisher and entrepreneur?

Female friendships have been a cornerstone of my personal and professional journey. The concept of “Yes Sisters” comes from my own experience of being uplifted by a circle of strong, compassionate women who saw my potential even when I doubted it myself. These relationships have been a source of strength, advice, and encouragement throughout my entrepreneurial journey, reminding me of the importance of community. In publishing, it’s easy to feel isolated, but having women in my corner — cheering me on, holding me accountable, and providing valuable insights — has been instrumental in keeping me grounded and motivated. My hope is that Hope Magazine fosters that same sense of sisterhood for our readers.

With the evolving landscape of media and publishing, how do you see the role of magazines like Hope in the digital age? What strategies do you employ to keep the publication relevant and impactful?

In the digital age, magazines like Hope have the unique opportunity to blend the traditional, tactile experience of print with the accessibility and immediacy of digital content. I see Hope not just as a magazine but as a movement — a community where readers can engage with content that speaks to their minds and hearts, both in print and online. We’ve embraced digital platforms by expanding our presence on social media, creating video content, and developing interactive features that invite readers to share their own stories. The key to staying relevant is listening to our audience and being agile enough to adapt while staying true to our core values of empowerment, beauty, and healing.

Looking back at your journey from launching Hope Magazine to becoming a published author, what would you say is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned about self-discovery and empowerment?

The most valuable lesson I’ve learned is that self-discovery and empowerment are ongoing processes, not destinations. In the early stages of my journey, I thought success meant reaching a specific goal, but over time I’ve realized that true empowerment comes from embracing who you are at every stage of life. It’s about accepting the ebbs and flows, the challenges, and the victories, and knowing that each experience — good or bad — is part of your growth. I’ve learned to trust the process, stay true to my purpose, and surround myself with people who believe in my vision. Empowerment is about owning your story and using it to uplift others.

What impact do you hope your work — whether through Hope Magazine, your book, or your social media presence — has on the next generation of women leaders?

I hope my work serves as a reminder to the next generation of women leaders that they don’t have to compromise their values or their authenticity to succeed. Through Hope Magazine, my book Yes Sisters, and my online presence, I want to show women that they can lead with compassion, purpose, and integrity. I hope to inspire them to embrace both their strengths and vulnerabilities, to build supportive communities, and to recognize that their voices matter. I also want them to understand the importance of self-care and mental wellness as they navigate their careers and personal lives. My goal is to plant seeds of confidence and courage that will grow into lasting change.

What else would you like our readers to know about you?

I’d like readers to know that, like many women, I’m constantly evolving. I’ve faced my own set of challenges, doubts, and fears, but I’ve learned to see them as opportunities for growth rather than obstacles. My journey is far from perfect, but it’s authentic, and that’s something I’m proud of. I believe in the power of vulnerability, in the importance of lifting others as we rise, and in the beauty of community. I’m deeply committed to continuing this work of empowerment through Hope Magazine and beyond, and I’m excited for what the future holds.
