David Larson, an American filmmaker, undertook the ambitious task of producing his debut feature film, Stampila, a political drama, in Moldova under an oppressive government.

Larson's journey in bringing Stampila to life was as compelling as the film itself. With experiences from the Peace Corps in Kyrgyzstan during the "Tulip Revolution," a degree in Business from Wharton University, and now residing in Shanghai, China, he tackled corruption and oppression in Moldova through storytelling.

Despite facing challenges such as government interference and threats to his actors, Larson led his team with determination and resourcefulness. Through Stampila, Larson highlights the perils of oligarchy and the importance of standing up against injustice.

What inspires you as a filmmaker?

Our actors were threatened. They were told that they would never work in the national Moldovan theater again if they participated in our movie. None of them quit. When the government canceled our locations, the actors' union offered their own building for us to use. A widow of an old Soviet cinematographer offered her apartment for us to shoot in. Nobody backed down. These were the most inspiring acts of courage I have ever witnessed.

Why did you make your movie under such challenging circumstances?

I believe that movies really can change the world.

What impact has your creative filmmaking process had on your own life?

For me, the most interesting part of directing is working with the actors and helping to draw the most nuanced performance possible out of them. It feels like being a coach to an elite athlete competing at a very high level. Ultimately, it is the athlete on the field, but they are following your strategy and direction. It is amazing to watch when it works the right way. The rest of the on-set filmmaking process is similar to the work I did as a management consultant: overseeing a group of experts, managing a massive project, and tweaking key performance indicators to maximize output.
