Robert De Niro Receives Palme d’Or at Cannes and Offers Unforgettable Masterclass
By Jérôme Tripier-Mondancin and Sandy Rodriguez
The Cannes Film Festival honored Robert De Niro with its prestigious honorary Palme d’Or, celebrating a career that has defined generations of cinema. The tribute came to life during an exclusive onstage masterclass at the Debussy Theatre, where De Niro was joined by acclaimed French artist and filmmaker JR for a heartfelt and revealing conversation.
De Niro, who has long been a staple at Cannes, last graced the festival in 2023 for the premiere of Killers of the Flower Moon. He also served as president of the jury in 2011. This year, his return marked not only a celebration of his storied film career but also a deeper dive into his personal history through art.
The masterclass with JR revisited their poignant collaboration on The Past Goes Fast (2022), a film in which De Niro opened the doors to his late father's long-sealed art studio. The conversation touched on themes of memory, identity, and the emotional ties between generations, offering audiences a rare glimpse into the man behind the performances.
Star power added to the atmosphere, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Quentin Tarantino among those in attendance. This served to underscore De Niro’s profound influence on both peers and protégés.
The 78th edition of Cannes opened not just with glamour, but with genuine introspection, as one of cinema’s greatest icons shared stories of his enduring passion for the craft.
