7 Tips To Boost Self-Confidence About Your Physical Appearance

By Batista Gremaud

Feeling confident about your physical appearance can be difficult, especially during your teenage years. Adults usually become more confident as they age, but this doesn't always apply to how they feel about their appearance, especially during the mid-life transition when hormones change. It is important to remember that everyone is unique and has different body types, so being comfortable and happy with your body type is essential instead of comparing it with others.

Here are seven ways to improve self-confidence about your appearance.

1. Prioritize your health

Regular physical activity is an integral part of taking care of your health and will help you stay in shape and feel better about how you look. Exercise, even in small doses, has a positive effect on both your physical and mental health. Not only will it positively impact your muscle tone and energy levels, but it will also help you manage stress and improve the quality of sleep. Eating healthily is another excellent way to prioritize your health, and it's essential for looking and feeling great. By eating nutritious foods that meet your body's daily needs, you can be sure you're getting everything you need to stay healthy and feel great. Eating right also helps you maintain a healthy weight and give you more energy.

Additionally, practicing good hygiene, such as washing your face twice daily, brushing your teeth, and showering regularly, is vital to feeling great physically. Making these small changes to prioritize your health can significantly boost your self-confidence about your physical appearance and make you feel better about your appearance.

2. Make a list of things you like about yourself.

Often, we tend to be our worst critics; we focus on our faults and mistakes and give ourselves a hard time. Instead of dwelling on your shortcomings, give yourself some credit by focusing on what you like about yourself rather than what you don't. For example, list things you appreciate about your appearance, and take time to look in the mirror and enjoy them. Everyone has at least one attribute they appreciate about themselves, so focus on that and let it motivate you.

Instead of worrying about what other people think or what society deems attractive, focus on your unique traits and strengths and be proud of yourself!

Finally, focus on things you like about your personality. For example, do you have a great sense of humor? Are you a great listener? Let those things shine through, and be proud of them. As a result, your self-confidence will increase. Then you will be able to attract the right people and opportunities.

3. Change the things you have control over

Identify the things you have control over and focus on changing what you can.

  • If you don't like how your nails look because you bite them, stop and take better care of them. Treat yourself to a regular manicure.

  • If you don't like your hair, explore different styles and colors.

  • If you're wearing old clothes that no longer fit your body, go out with a friend one weekend and buy a new wardrobe for the upcoming season. It does not have to be expensive; many department stores offer quality clothes on a budget.

  • If you feel out of shape, join a gym to surround yourself with people working to improve themselves. You will feel empowered because you are working hard to achieve something you have control over. Additionally, exercise releases positive endorphins, which will make you feel happier.

4. Practice good posture

Good posture positively affects physical and mental health and makes you look better and more attractive. Carrying yourself with good posture creates a positive impression of physical fitness and vitality.

Poor posture affects mood behavior by causing feelings of depression, stress, and fatigue, leading to a decrease in confidence, productivity, and overall happiness.

Poor posture has also been linked to increased physical pain, such as neck and back pain, which can cause irritability and agitation. In addition, poor posture can lead to reduced circulation, causing headaches or migraines and affecting cognitive ability and concentration.

On the other hand, good posture makes you look taller and leaner, positively impacting your physical appearance and enhancing your body proportions. Standing tall exudes a feeling of strength and affects how others perceive you.

In addition, it makes your clothes fit better.

5. Don't take things personally.

One reason why people lack self-confidence is because they take things too personally. Don't take it to heart if someone says something that hurts your feelings. It's more likely that the other person is dealing with their own issues and insecurities. Don't let their words define you. Instead, focus on how you feel about yourself. Knowing you are a good person with much to offer is all that matters.

  • Be assertive. This means speaking up for yourself and standing up for your beliefs. It also means setting boundaries and saying "no" when necessary.

  • Make eye contact. When maintaining eye contact, an individual is likelier to be seen as trustworthy. People often perceive those who make eye contact as more attractive and likable due to the directness of the communication. Furthermore, eye contact conveys a sense of expressiveness and emotion, giving the individual an overall more appealing physical presence.

  • Be open to compliments. When someone pays you a compliment, accept it graciously. Don't try to downplay the compliment or brush it off. Instead, say "thank you" and move on. Accepting compliments is a sign of confidence and will make you feel good about yourself.

6. Smile more

Smiling is a great way to make yourself more attractive, boost your self-confidence, and make you feel better.

It is a form of body language expressing various emotions, from happiness and contentment to love and amusement; a smile can be a way to defuse a tense or awkward situation. So smiling is good for you and the people around you.

Smiling is contagious, so surround yourself with positive people who appreciate you. Energy attracts like energy, so if you surround yourself with positive people, they will give you positive reinforcement on whether or not new outfits look good or if new hairstyles are flattering without passing judgment.

7. Relax

Taking proactive steps towards self-confidence will change how you feel about yourself for the better and empower you to enjoy the good things in life to the fullest.

  • Take the time to relax and relish in your accomplishments.

  • Pamper yourself with regular massages, a bath at the end of a long day, or treat yourself to some new cosmetic products.

  • Explore, take a weekend getaway, or check out a new city.

  • Allow yourself to take a break and truly indulge in something you love.

  • Take time to reflect and think about what makes you happiest.

  • Write down your achievements and goals so that you can look back and appreciate them.

  • Finally, connect with your loved ones; surrounding yourself with positive people can reduce stress and help you to appreciate all you have achieved.

If you or someone you love suffer from a mental health condition, such as body dysmorphic disorder, talk to your doctor or a mental health professional. They can help you develop a plan to improve your self-esteem.
