Alexandra Schaller is the production designer behind After Yang, the sci-fi drama from critically acclaimed director Kogonada starring Colin Ferrell, Jodie Turner-Smith and Justin H. Min. After Yang follows a father, who, after buying his daughter an artificial intelligence android as a companion, is led down a rabbit hole of conspiracy and personal introspection regarding their own lives. Schaller’s production design beautifully compliment’s Kogoada’s minimal-futuristic aesthetic, seamlessly hinting at a technological world still obsessed by today’s existential crises. Adapted from an Alexander Weinstein short story, After Yang premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival where it earned a nomination for Un Certain Regard and it is the recipient of the 2022 Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize. After Yang’s excellent production shines through its entirety, highlighting the seemingly immortal existential question of mortality itself.
Please tell us the title of your film and your role?
I’m the production designer of AFTER YANG directed by Kogonada
What is the film about?
The film centers around a family in the future whose robotic family member malfunctions. It’s a movie about life and connection — to each other and to the greater world.
How did you feel when you found out your film would showcase at Sundance?
The movie premiered at the Cannes film festival in 2021 and it was so wonderful to see it there with an audience for the first time and celebrate our work on the film. It’s a film that everyone poured their heart into and as Sundance is one of my favorite film festivals, I can think of no better place to introduce it to audiences here at home.
What do you hope audiences take from watching your movie?
That the future can look and feel many different ways and that everyone has an impact.
