Award-Winning Composer Mariano Saulino: Solving the Film Scoring Puzzle

Mariano Saulino is an award-winning film composer who has scored music for over 60 projects, including features, documentaries, shorts, and television series. He has composed music for Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Fox, and Lionsgate, among others.

Mariano has won dozens of awards as a composer, including for Best Score at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards, the Los Angeles Film Awards, Los Angeles Shorts, the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival, and the Hollywood Boulevard Film Festival. At present, he divides his time between Argentina and Los Angeles.

What led you to become a film composer?

I have always loved film scores, I loved them since I was a kid, but my main motivation came when I stumbled upon it. I was helping a few friends who were studying film production and direction at the time. They needed someone who could write the music score for their thesis films.

I can recall entering into the studio with a brief idea of a theme, and writing and performing multiple instruments right there, on the fly. I felt like a fish in the water! Since then, I have never stopped.

What are some of the projects you are currently working on?

I've recently signed with this London-based film company, Roar Creative Media, directed by Stephen Gillen. I will be scoring their upcoming films and TV series. In these upcoming months, I'll be also scoring an action/war feature film, one drama and two westerns.

I also run my own film music library, a music company conceived for independent filmmakers. You can find more about it at www.impacttrailermusiclibrary.com

What makes you different from other composers?

I was born and raised in Argentina, so my lead lines and a few rhythms I use are somewhat influenced by tango and folklore. At the same time, I've been taught jazz and classical music, so I find my own compositional voice by blending all of these elements with Americana and some world music.

What is an exciting yet challenging part of creating music for film and TV?

Solving the film score puzzle is the most exciting aspect. Bringing to light what the director is looking for. I love this challenge. Throughout this creative process, you share thoughts, you learn, you improve your craft.

I have scored over 60 films so far, and every new project I get into is still a new microcosmos, ready to be discovered by me. Each film has its own needs in terms of tone and music style, and as a film composer I'm here to support and serve the story in the film. Solving this need without distracting the audience, yet bringing emotion to the film, is definitely my goal as well as my passion.

What have been the proudest moments in your career?

When I received my first award in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards festival. That evening was a very special moment I spent alongside my family and colleagues. That moment completed me by recognizing my years of searching and great efforts.

What or who inspires you?

Of course, great composers, my heroes, and my teachers. However, what definitely influences me the most when it comes to writing music for pictures is the acting. The performance, also the editing, whatever I see and hear in the film I'm writing for. I feel everything is kind of hidden right there, just waiting for me to make it listenable: All the notes, the pacing, the rhythm. All the music I need to write will be told to me by the acting.
